The story of this unique village began about 700 years ago. Since a fossil fuel called ‘Peat’ was found in the subsoil of Giethoorn, it was mined here. Peat, which is softer than coal, was a very useful fuel for that time. Due to continuous mining, the pits in Giethoorn got deeper and filled with water. Eventually, the same pits joined together and formed canals, due to which the waterways of Giethoorn were automatically prepared.
